QUESTION: Are there any wild bee hives?

Yes there are a few wild hives. Unfortunately there are not many wild bees left because little mites attack the hives and kill them. Beekeepers use special traps and medications to kill the mites, but the wild hives do not have this protection.

My mom found a wild hive in the forest near our home in Colorado. My GrandDaddy and I went to inspect it? We found that the bees had built a barrier layer of wax across the intrance to their hive to protect them through the long cold winter. In April they had begun to eat away a hole in the lower right corner of the barrier so they could fly out on warm sunny spring days. By summer, I bet the whole barrier will be gone.

We will not take any honey from this hive. Since it is small, there is no room for extra honey and the bees will need all that they make and store to eat during the next winter.
